paper republic stands for stunning vegetable-tanned, full-grain soft cow leather.
We have searched far and wide to find the best leather for our notebooks.
We buy our leather directly from family-run tanneries in the heart of Toscany (Italy) which use absolutely no chrome in the tanning process - only natural, non-chemical extracts. The full-grain leather is softened with natural fat and has a full anilin finish, meaning that it is dyed only with soluble dyed, which retains the leather natural grain and do not cover the surface with synthetic elements. This ancestral tanning is a slow and artisanal process: it takes on average two months to tan and dye a cow hide.
The vegetable-tanning means that the colour and texture of our leather have a natural look and get a unique patina overt time. The leather smells from day one wonderful, as there are no chemical agents used in the tanning process. It also means that the leather is truly handmade and that colour irregularities are absolutely normal.
You will love seeing and feeling how you leather gets even more beautiful over time. The image above shows the cognac grand voyageur of Jérôme, paper republic's founder, after 4 years of intensive use, next to a new cognac leather!
fountain-pen friendly paper
The writing paper we use in our notebooks is made in one of the best, if not the best, European paper mill - in Sweden.
It is a acid-free, wood-free FSC-certified 80gsm natural paper with a nice cream color and a soft touch.
We think that in terms of writing quality it is one of the best paper you can currently find on the market. It feels great to write on, be it with a pen, pencil or fountain pen.
We do not put any lamination on the covers to keep the natural feel of the paper.
Our republic is based on trust and dedication with all our partners.
We are proud to work with some of the best artisans and manufacturers in Europe.
We do not only see them as suppliers but as business partners who are part of our republic. They are all passionate about their craft. Most of them are in Central Europe.
While we craft our journals in-house in our workshop, our accessories are produced by artisans in Hungary. Our notebooks are printed in a familiy-run printing house in Vienna. Our cardboard packaging boxes are produced in Vienna, too. Our wood boxes for the notebooks kits are made near Salzburg in Austria.
